violet violetREVIEWS Single Of The Week 26th/30th Nov 2007 Love This Band b/w Baby's Going Down - Steve Lamaqc BB6 Music THE-MAG 14/11/2007 The audible hooks in 'Love This Band' include a great bit of guitar and seriously good drumming. There's also a comprehensive buttering of quality vocals to prove they can hit a melody as well as a squeek. 'Babys Going Down' has a seriously great beat, like The Cure's 'A Forest', but with an up and down bass line and really simple guitars. The vocals do the rest of the work, supplying instrumental hooks with their ooh-oohing. I can't dismiss Violet Violet as another grrrlpunk outfit, because they're just too damn good. Saur 8/10
DROWNED IN SOUND Both tracks on here are perfectly worthy of a-side status, both being riotous slices of girl rock fantasticness with enough variation between ‘em to prevent Violet Violet being charged with one-song-ponydom. ‘Love This Band’ crunches and thunders its way through an aggressive, power-chording verse which makes way for a sharper edged, jerkier sound in the chorus; while ‘Baby’s Going Down’ spirals frantically through the descending guitars of the verse before switching to an ominous and overcast mood for the chorus. ‘Love This Band’ has a straight-upfront, unapologetically in-yer-face stripped-down feeling to it; ‘Baby’s Going Down’ uses interlaced “Woah-oh-oh” noises to add a disorientating layer of sound over the top of the already frantically fast riff. Both tracks are fine samples of angry riotgrrl-type punk in the Sleater Kinney vein, with the intelligence to sneer with accuracy and the guts to be loud enough to mean it. And, along with all the venom, there’s also an ear for a tune and an inventiveness which mean that as well as being invigorating and ear searing, these tracks are bloody good fun. www.violetviolet.co.uk www.myspace.com/violetviolet1

The Great Shakes"Martha Reeves and the Vandellas drinking Gin with Philip Larkin." On stage, the Shakes bash retro organ and telecaster twang into shape, sounding like The Beach Boys in the echo of a lightly rain dampened British town, but, The Great Shakes are upbeat and love being there. Fall in love with them, and then maybe break their hearts so they can write more great pop songs. Each gig a whistle stop history of pop. The Great Shakes have performed with Ghosts, Vincent Vincent and the Villains, Scouting For Girls, Alterkicks, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Cheeky Cheeky & The Nosebleeds, The Others.
Man, these guys are good. Melodramatic and theatrical with an element of Mod rock and Motown swing - Bibabidi Adam Darricott: guitar, vocals Joe Mace: drums www.myspace.com/thegreatshakesmusic

C/O/R/DC/O/R/D – Later Is Better For Me, If That’s OKReleased 25/04/2011 NR77 – CD/DD Album NRONERECORDS Distributed by NR ONE/ITUNES Norwich cult band CORD have refactored and re-mastered what would have made up their second album for Island Records - if they had not been dropped after failing to convert their first, widely misunderstood album, into commercial success in 2006. Songwriter James Leeds sums it up - "Island desperately wanted us to turn away from our early influences of Sunny Day Real Estate, Muse, Deus, et al and produce something commercially similar to Coldplay. We were kids offered a golden ticket and made the wrong choice, something we quickly realised. The songs that form 'Later Is Better for Me, If That’s OK' were a rebellion against the big-record-company shareholder-profit culture, and Island consequently balked upon hearing the first demos - this wasn't what they'd ordered! - ultimately leading to them dropping the band. The ironic thing is it's a much better record. The songs are such a mixture of emotions and subjects - Easier To Sleep is about corporate management; War Of All Against All about the fragility of the West; The Small Things about the true nature of happiness; Heart Failure about the death of my granddad in quick succession from his wife and finally, When?, Up and Rain Falling On Snow are directly about our frustrations with the music business.” tracklisting: The Fear / When / What Makes You So Special? / Up / The Small Things / Easier To Sleep Suburbia / A War Of All Against All / Heart Failure / Some Kind Of Vampire / I’m Leaving You / Hold On / Rain Falling On Snow. About C/O/R/D: Formed in October 2000, the band signed to Island in April 2004. Single Winter charted at number 34 in Summer 2006 and their debut album Other People’s Lives Are Not As Perfect As They Seem was released in October 2006. C/O/R/D were released from their contract in March 2007. The group continue to play in Norwich as the 3 piece Tin Man. C/O/R/D are: James Leeds – Vocals, Keys, Guitar / Michael Jackson – Guitar / Andy Walsh – Bass / Phil Davison - Drums

We Can't DanceWE CAN’T DANCE – ROUTINES EPReleased 02/05/2011 NR84 – CD EP NRONERECORDS Distributed by NR ONE/IODA Norwich has a growing trend for turning out serious talent and We Can’t Dance are no exception. Described recently as having just the right amount of Fuck You-ness for a young up and coming act by national glossy Artrocker. The band are hijacking all venues in an attempted to bring back compulsory dancing by all who attend. ‘It's not a fucking trip to the library is it?’ says lead singer Harry - ‘why go to a gig if you don’t want to be part of it?’ The Routines EP is the group’s first major release and sees four live favourites given the studio treatment. Lead track Wishful Thinking has a highly contagious riff and chorus so make sure you get your shots before listening to it. As well as being a track way beyond their years Vessels highlights the wow factor of having great male and female lead vocals. Foxton Hop and It’s Only Cool To Die On Wednesday are both anthems and typical of the band’s agenda to get people hitting the dance floor. We Can’t Dance are planning a year of touring and further recordings are in the pipeline, so have no doubt that the band will be pulling you into the barrier at your local venue soon. tracklisting: Wishful Thinking / Vessels / Foxton Hop / It’s Only Cool To Die On Wednesday About We Can’t Dance: Formed in late 2009 while all students at Access to Music in Norwich; home of local talent such as Josh Weller, Ria Ritchie and the recently Atlantic signed Ed Sheeran. WCD impressed many by crowbarring their way onto a scene that already contained well known acts such as The Kabeedies, Violet Violet and The Brownies. They hit the local headlines with their punk-esque ode to veteran ex Norwich City football player Gary Doherty in 2010 before shooting off on their first UK tour. More: www.facebook.com/wecantdance We Can’t Dance are: Harry Dawson – Vocals, Guitar / Josie Steward – Vocals, Guitar / Tom Joy – Bass / Drums – Ash Alsop www.facebook.com/wecantdance
